Show Your Pets Some Love This Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day isn't just for humans anymore--it's for pets too! According to a national survey of 1,000 pet owners by Purina, more than 61 percent plan to include their pets in their Valentine's Day celebration.

The typical Valentine's Day usually includes romantic dinners, sappy cards and chocolate (of course). This year, however, many pet lovers will also be showing their pets some love. Spending on pets for the holiday is estimated to reach $367 million, according to the National Retail Federation's 2008 Valentine's Day Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey. Now, that's a lot of love!

There are plenty of ways to show your pets just how much they are adored this Valentine's Day.

* Save the chocolate for yourself and give your pet their favorite treat. Or give them something created just for the occasion from your favorite pet bakery.

* Bring home a new toy or that special gift for your pet to enjoy on Valentine's Day.

* Take your pet to the spa. Everyone likes to be pampered.

* Treat your pet to a massage. You can do this yourself or make an appointment for Fido or Kitty with a professional masseuse. Be careful--this could be habit forming.

* Spend some quality time with your pet. Take your dog to that dog park you've been meaning to check out. Or just spend some extra time playing with your dog, cat, bird or other pet.

* If you're looking for love, visit your local animal shelter. You'll find plenty of dogs and cats looking for that perfect someone. Or spread the love around by donating some old newspapers, pet toys, pet food, dog collars or other items needed.

So, fellow pet lovers, don't be afraid to show your pets some love this Valentine's Day. You'll be in good company.
