One of the first words that comes to mind when thinking of Valentine's Day is chocolate. Around Valentine's Day, you probably find yourself eating more and more, and giving it to your friends and family. Since your pet is part of the family, you want to include him in the celebration by giving him something special to eat. Most pet owners know that chocolate is toxic to cats and dogs (as well as other animals), so you want to consider alternative treats. Even if you do not give your pet chocolate, it's still important to not leave it around, where your pet can get to it. Now that chocolate is out of the (pet's) picture, let's consider some pet friendly treats. Dogs will eat almost anything, so finding a Valentine's Day treat shouldn't be too difficult. You probably have a standard treat that you give them for tricks, obedience, or just because. Since it's a special day,why not try something new? If your dog usually gets milk bones, try a soft treat like bacon strips, something sausage flavored, etc. Or, if you are into baking, you could look up some recipes for dog treats. You can get the whole family involved by making a gift basket with a combination of store-bought and homemade treats. Whichever way you go, your dog will appreciate something new. Cats tend to be bit more picky when it comes to food. It is helpful to know what types of flavors they like. Also, if your cat is on a diet of dry food, you can give her a can of wet food as a special treat. As with dogs, there are available recipes for homemade cat treats. Lastly, your cat might enjoy a plain piece of chicken, or a can of tuna. Like a dog, your cat will appreciate a special treat. But, beware--your cat might now expect a special treat every day! With pet friendly food, you can celebrate Valentine's Day with your pet without leaving him (or her) out of the fun.
